Video format


Video files are collections of images, audio and other data. The attributes of the video signal include the resolution, frame rate, audio channels, and various additional metadata. Many different ways exist to encode video data and there are loads of different formats for saving videos, which can be confusing. Some formats are optimal for conventional media usage, but video surveillance requires special video attributes, as security footages are often used as crucial evidences in critical situations, and operators should manage them versatile ways.

One of the most popular multimedia file formats is the AVI (Audio Video Interleave), which is consisting of only one stream that contains an audio and a video track. Its resolution and FPS values are fixed and cannot be changed once the stream has been exported. The data within this file can be encoded in a number of different codecs and several standards are used to compress them. Most of the video player programs handle AVI files, therefore its usage is widely common, however it is nearly useless in multi-megapixel video surveillance applications.

LOGIPIX created a unique file format that makes use of the advantages of the JPEG2000 compression standard. In the video stream every image is individually compressed. Unlike AVI consists only a single stream, SCV is a multi-stream video file format, which means it contains video streams with different FPS and resolution values that can be changed during playback. The scalable solution of JPEG2000 pictures allows the operator to zoom in the images when needed and therefore reach higher resolution that facilitates to find tiny but important image details.

For playback LOGIPIX has developed LPlayer that is a free and redistributable media player. Every security application features are available on the footage, just like image labeling, saving and direct printing, forward and backward playing and also frame-by-frame stepping.

Each frame of an SCV has a unique header and the stream is tamper proof. LOGIPIX system use a MD5 cryptographic hash function to provide the integrity of the security footage. Video streams can be protected also by a digital signature.
